Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained what is new fort he company, during a virtual event online.
"The next platform in medium will be even more immersive," he said.
"An embodied internet where you're in the experience, not just looking at it. We call this the metaverse."
The word "Meta" comes from the Greek word for "beyond."
As everybody knows, Facebook owned popular apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. What is the mission of this change? What it means for users?
As part of its rebranding, Facebook will develop a newly immersive VR option. Digital avatars will be "living 3D representations" of users, Zuckerberg said, which will allow people to work, play games and socialize together.
This social platform, called Horizon, will be accessible through Facebook's Oculus Quest, the company's VR headset.
The change could be key to the company's existence
Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged the metaverse's sci-fi sound but predicted it would be mainstream within a decade. In that time, he hopes the metaverse will reach 1 billion users, facilitate billions of dollars' worth of e-commerce and support millions of new jobs.
The market value of Facebook is $868.5 billion. One of the largest companies by market capitalization. It had 3.6 billion monthly users worldwide.
